How We're Tackling 30 Years of Stuff Without Losing Our Minds

There comes a point in life when you look around your home and realize you're not just sorting through belongings—you're sorting through decades of memories. That's exactly where we are right now.

When I posted my first video, I promised I'd bring you along on our journey and show you what was happening inside our house. Then life happened, and honestly, I got overwhelmed.

Because when I walked into our home, I wasn't looking at a weekend decluttering project. I was looking at 30 years of stuff.

The Reality of Downsizing After 30 Years

My husband and I are preparing for our next chapter, and that means going through every room, every closet, every box, and every forgotten corner of our home.

When you've lived somewhere for decades, it's amazing how much accumulates.

Books.

School papers.

Kids' keepsakes.

Furniture.

Holiday decorations.

Family heirlooms.

Things you forgot you even owned.

The emotional weight of it can feel just as heavy as the physical clutter.

The Simple Method That's Keeping Me Sane

I quickly realized that if I tried to tackle the whole house at once, I'd shut down before I even started.

So I created a simple system.

As I work through each room, I create separate piles:

Keep

Items we'll be taking with us into our next chapter.

Store

Things we aren't ready to part with but don't need immediate access to.

Give to Family

Special items that belong with one of our children.

Donate

Items that still have life left in them but no longer serve us.

Trash

The things that simply need to go.

This system helps me make decisions quickly without getting overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff.

My Biggest Rule: Finish One Room Before Starting Another

This has been the game changer.

I don't leave a room until it's finished.

No bouncing back and forth.

No wandering into another room because I found something that belongs there.

No "I'll come back to this later."

One room. One mission.

Then move on.

If you're anything like me, it's easy to get distracted. One box leads to another. One memory leads to another. Before you know it, you've spent three hours reminiscing and haven't actually accomplished anything.

Finishing one room completely before moving on keeps the momentum going.

The Emotional Side of Letting Go

Some things are easy.

Some things aren't.

As I work through the house, I'm finding pieces that belonged to my grandparents, handmade treasures, family keepsakes, and little reminders of different seasons of life.

Those items require a little more thought.

Not because they're valuable financially, but because they're valuable emotionally.

I've learned it's okay to pause for a memory.

It's okay to smile.

It's okay to feel sentimental.

Just don't let the memories stop the progress.

What's Left?

The first floor is mostly complete.

Now comes the hard part:

  • The upstairs closets
  • Clothing
  • The attic
  • The basement
  • The garage

And if you've ever cleaned out an attic or basement after 30 years, you know exactly why I'm taking a deep breath before I start.

Progress Over Perfection

This journey isn't about creating a perfectly minimal home.

It's about creating space for what's next.

Whether you're downsizing, preparing for retirement, moving into an RV, becoming an empty nester, or simply tired of managing too much stuff, remember this:

You don't have to finish everything today.

Just pick one room.

Create your piles.

Make decisions.

Finish that room.

Then move on to the next.

One room at a time.

One box at a time.

One memory at a time.

And eventually, you'll look back and realize you've made more progress than you ever thought possible.

We're still in the middle of our journey, but I'll continue sharing the process as we go.
